Mercedes and Monte Cristo meet, and Monte Cristo finally admits to being Dantés, showing her the accusation against him. However, at the opera, he still challenges Monte Cristo to a duel at 8 oclock the following day. Albert asks Mercedes why Monte Cristo would hate Fernand, and she begs Albert to not follow through with his threats. He confronts Danglars for having inquired about his father’s connection to Janina, who defends himself by saying he had a right to look into the family of his daughter’s suitor, but he would never have thought to look into the story of Ali Pasha and Janina if not for the Count of Monte Cristo. The court unanimously declares Fernand’s guilt.Īlbert swears to Beauchamp that he will kill the man responsible for his father’s defamation. The evidence is stacked against him as Haydée testifies against him. Villefort denies the accusations, noticing his daughters’ tears, but his own wife’s grim smile.įernand is shocked to hear the accusations against him, and asks for a trial. He then accuses Valentine of the attempted murders, as she had packaged everything. The doctor deduces that the poison had been intended for Noirtier, but he was tolerant to it due to his use of it as a painkiller. Barrois is soon declared dead, and the doctor deduces brucine was in the lemonade, the same poison he claimed to have killed the Marquis and Marquise. Villefort enters due to the screams and calls for the doctor, who is able to get from Barrois that he had made the lemonade but left it sitting about. Almost immediately, Barrois falls into a seizure. Barrois tires quickly, and Valentine offers him some of Noirtier’s lemonade. Valentine and Maximilian are escorted to Noirtier’s chambers by Noirtier’s servant, Barrois. Later that day, an article is published in Beauchamp’s newspapers that Fernand was responsible for Ali Pasha’s death. At the same time, Fernand visits Danglars to confirm that Eugénie and Albert were to be married, but is shocked when Danglars tells him he had changed his mind.
